Specialization in Advanced Practice Careers

What is a traditional career path for advanced practice providers? It’s a trick question of course, because there isn’t one.  Advanced practice careers can take many turns. Advanced Practice Practitioners are trained in all areas of medicine, but as their advanced practice careers develop they may choose to specialize in an area they enjoy.

Jane, a nurse practitioner in the Boston area, is a certified FNP but she rarely works family nurse practitioner jobs anymore. Since going back to get her masters in psychopharmacology, Jane primarily works psychiatric nurse practitioner jobs.

“Primary care is too demanding,” said Jane, when asked about the transition.  “You have ten minutes with a patient and you’re trying to cover everything. There are too many balls up in the air.”

“I want to love what I’m doing,” said Jane, and it’s clear that as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, she does. Currently, Jane is working a locum tenens position in Albany, New York. The assignment requires her to perform mental health assessments and medication evaluations in a private practice.

Her specialization has allowed her to work psychiatric nurse practitioner jobs in a range of settings, including a county jail. Jane enjoyed that particular assignment so much that she ended up accepting a permanent position there.

Her favorite thing about locum jobs? “I don’t get caught up in office politics,” she said, laughing. “And I like that I could go to exotic places on locum jobs, but I haven’t,” she added.

Jane has stayed close to home with her locum jobs, primarily working in her home state of Massachusetts and also in New York, where she has family. “I’ve worked in places in the middle of nowhere,” she said, “but it’s nice to know I have friends just an hour away.”

Jane’s experience with AdvancedPractice.com has been enjoyable. AdvancedPractice.com recruiter Neil Trabel assisted her with her current placement and they are working together to secure her next job.
